There may be many reasons that you are considering a move to the Philippines. It may be that you seek a new start in your life, you may be moving to join a Filipino Girlfriend, You may be seeking somewhere cheaper to live, or possibly you seek adventure. All of these are valid reasons, and in this handbook, I hope to provide the information to make your transition to life in the Philippines easier and most of it is based on what I have learned in my time in the Philippines. My name is Ray Brocklesby. I am a British guy who has recently retired, and I live in a city near Manila, called Dasmarinas. Previously, I have also lived in Tagum City, Mindanao. Two very different locations and different lifestyles. This brings me to my first point which is choosing your location in the Philippines wisely. On the island of Mindanao (at the south of the archipelago) there has been an ongoing insurgency taking place by Muslim extremists who have now associated themselves with the so-called Islamic State. Both the USA and UK governments advise discretion when it comes to traveling to parts of Mindanao. The current warning from the UK Government is: - The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to western and central Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago because of terrorist activity and clashes between the military and insurgent groups. The FCO advise against all but essential travel to the remainder of Mindanao (excluding Camiguin, Dinagat and Siargao Islands) due to the threat of terrorism. 6th March 2019 If you are joining a Filipino girlfriend, they may be a little dismissive of these warnings, since they live there with no problems perhaps, but your situation as a westerner (and possible kidnap target) is much riskier.
